Face serum is a product we’ve all been familiar with for a while – it’s the latest miracle cosmetology invention and one of the best cosmetics you can provide your skin with. Do you need a face serum and why? We are here to explain!

What is a face serum?

Serums are generally used after cleansing and before applying your moisturizer. They are usually chosen according to certain skin conditions, such as pigmentation spots, aging, dryness, skin blemishes, or lack of radiance. A serum is usually a powerful product with active ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin. It has a lighter formula as it is often quite watery and absorbs faster than a moisturizer.

Serum – a specialized product for all skin needs

As we mentioned, serums are most often selected according to your needs. Whether it’s signs of aging, dry skin, irritated/sensitive skin, polluted or dull skin, face serum is a great solution. It’s a great product that contains stronger ingredients than a regular face cream.
Since it is designed to deal with different skin problems, its purpose is usually clearly stated on the packaging. If you are looking for an effective serum, check its ingredients on the INCI list and all the active ingredients should be high on the list. Serums can be used both in the morning and in the evening after cleansing the skin, before moisturizing.

Popular serum ingredients

One ingredient with great properties for the skin is niacinamide. It can balance sebum production and it is good for polluted/combination skin as it helps retain moisture in the skin and supports the skin barrier. At the same time, it can help reduce pigmentation spots and provide smoother skin.
Niacinamide is well tolerated and works on most skin types.

Hyaluronic acid is another popular serum ingredient as it provides the skin with plenty of moisture and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (as lines and wrinkles look worse on dry skin). Hyaluronic acid is well tolerated by most skin types.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects against UV damage, so a vitamin C serum would be ideal combined with sunscreen. Vitamin C is more effective when combined with another antioxidant like vitamin E (also known as tocopherol). Therefore, we encourage you to look for both of these ingredients in the INCI list.

Retinol is an ingredient with the most documented results. It can plump up wrinkles and renew the skin! It often comes as a serum but there is also retinol in oil form. It takes some time before the skin begins to tolerate retinol, so don’t apply this ingredient too often at first (it’s best to apply it 1-2 times a week, then every other day). Retinol increases collagen production, which in turn reduces fine lines and wrinkles, evens out skin tone, helps lighten pigmentation spots, balances blemished skin, and provides increased cell renewal. Retinol is applied in the evening after cleansing the skin before the moisturizer. You must use sunscreen if you use retinol.

Serum is not an essential product but if you are struggling with specific skin problems, serums are one of the most effective products you can use as it contains a massive amount of active ingredients.
